The word Ayurveda has been derived from Sanskrit, "Ayu" means "life" and "Veda" means "science". Ayurveda is considered to be originator of all healing techniques as it predates all forms of healing systems. It was developed in India some 3000 years ago; and, is currently, the oldest practiced healing system in the world. The main textbook of Ayurveda, the Charaka Samhita, describes how in ancient times the Vedic Rishis (enlightened sages or "seers") became concerned that mankind was suffering from many illnesses. A meeting of the great sages was called to find a way to aid mankind and the knowledge of Ayurveda came out of this gathering. Although it may be an ancient and well-known healing system in the East, it is still relatively new in the West and is slowly finding its rightful place in western herbal science.
Ayurveda 的最主要作用, the Charaka Samhita ， 詳述了遠古的 Vedic Rishis ( 簡稱 sages or "seers") 對人類面對的種種疾病的關注 。
